School Library Media Activities Monthly/Volume XXV, Number 1/September 2008

SLMAM's 25th Anniversary

By Deborah Detenbeck Levitov

This issue launches the 25th anniversary of School Library Media Activities Monthly. Volume 1, Issue 1 was launched in September 1983. Join us in celebrating this twenty-five year milestone throughout the volume year. Watch for upcoming interviews posted on our Web site with such people as the magazine's founder, Paula Montgomery, and longtime authors Danny Callison and Barbara Safford. They will share their involvement with SLMAM and perspectives of the school library media profession. In each issue look for “A Look Back—Updated” in the Activities Almanac and a Retro-Lesson Plan—Updated.

There are other milestones for the magazine with retiring authors and new authors coming on board. Let me introduce you to our new author lineup...

With this issue it is my pleasure to introduce Karla Wendelin as the new author for the "Wild about Books" column. Readers will immediately detect Karla’s unbridled enthusiasm for literature that is equally matched by her practical but creative experience as a library media specialist. Karla spent the last several years in an elementary building filled with diversity and challenges. I am sure readers will enjoy her column. Welcome to Karla!

I would also like to welcome Karla Krueger and Meghan Harper, new authors for the "Reach for Reference" column. This dynamic duo will be delivering insightful reviews of K-12 reference resources. Their writing will reflect their background as practitioners as well as professors of reference courses for aspiring library media specialists. Welcome to Karla and Meghan—their combined expertise will be an asset for SLMAM readers.

Although Sharron McElmeel is not a new author for SLMAM, she is taking on a new assignment in this volume with the launch of the column "Author Central." Sharron plans to bring author insights to SLMAM readers through personal interviews with authors. Sharron will wow readers with her knowledge of authors and literature.

In addition to reading SLMAM, don’t forget to log on to our blog headed up by Kristin Fontiachiaro for ongoing discussion and information related to AASL’s Standards for the 21st-Century Learner ( http://blog.schoollibrarymedia.com/).
