Sandra Hughes-Hassell, SLM Advisory Board member and author, and professor for the School of Information and Library Science at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina has received, as of October 2011, an IMLS Planning Grant. Through the grant, the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the School of Library and Information Science at North Carolina Central University will host a summit titled Building a Bridge to Literacy for African-American Male Youth: A Call to Action for the Library Community.
Debra Kachel, SLM author, received an IMLS research grant for which the Health Sciences Libraries Consortium will partner with the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association and the Education Law Center of Pennsylvania to identify and measure current gaps in Pennsylvania school libraries that may deter school systems statewide from effectively teaching needed 21st-century skills to students. This one-year project will also provide data and projections on the investments that would be needed to close identified gaps and achieve higher levels of student achievement.
Marilyn Arnone, SLM author, received an IMLS research grant to explore the connections between free voluntary reading (FVR) in public library summer reading programs for youth and the development of information literacy skills. The research will also examine intrinsic motivation to read among middle school students and its benefits for improving youth literacy.
Helen Adams, SLM author and online instructor at Mansfield University School Library and Information Technologies Department, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Freedom to Read Foundation (http://ala.org/ala/newspresscenter/news/pr.cfm?id=7256).

Dr. Carolyn S. Brodie, SLM columnist and Advisory Board member, has been elected ALSC 2012-2013 president (http://tinyurl.com/3v9z3z8).
Ann Martin, Director, Henrico County Public Schools (Virginia), has been awarded the 2011 AASL National School Library Program of the Year Award. Ann Martin is a Libraries Unlimited and SLM author.
